Laser Thermometer

Home Inspectors use a great number of tools in their work. Laser thermometers are one of the diagnostic instruments they use or should be using. The laser thermometer provides fast measurement of temperature in a non-contact manner.

A non-contact measurement of temperature is safer, faster, and easier to perform. Imagine taking a temperature of a window panel or a furnace or of air coming from a ventilation duct. Such measurements provide many challenges such as a large area, overly hot surface, or an area too far out of reach.

A laser thermometer has been designed to overcome all of these challenges. First, you don’t have to touch a surface, not to mention taking readings many times to get an average reading of a window panel. The laser thermometer detects the infrared energy emitted from the window panel and converts it to temperature reading. You can also be farther away from an object.

How far? It all depends on distance to spot ratio of the thermometer. If it is 20:1, a home inspector can be 20 feet away and take an accurate measurement of a spot 1-foot in diameter. Just imagine ac cooling grilles in vaulted ceilings. They are positioned quite high, so normally you would need to take a ladder and climb it before measuring temperature with a regular thermometer, but not with a laser one.
