Amprobe ULD-405 Ultrasonic Leak Detector
The Amprobe ULD-405 is an Ultrasonic Leak Detector for locating compressed air in different applications such as plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, motors, and automobile repairs. The ULD-405 Receiver detects ultrasounds within 20 kHz to 90 kHz frequency, then amplifies and converts these ultrasonic sounds to frequencies and levels that the human ear can hear to pinpoint the exact location of the equipment failure. The signal strength of the leak is clearly shown on the Amprobe ultrasonic leak detector’s large LCD by a number and a bar graph. The 20 kHz to 90 kHz frequency range is the optimal range for detecting leakage events in different systems, such as HVAC systems and pneumatic lines. A change in the ultrasound produced by these systems may indicate that it is beginning to fail.

Overview
Ultrasonic sound, or ultrasound, is a sound wave with frequencies above 20 kHz, higher than the upper audible limit of human hearing. Ultrasound can be generated when turbulence created by air or gas is forced through a small opening. Leaking air or gas is generally considered to be viscous flow, and as the flow velocity increases, the frequency of the ultrasound emitted becomes higher. Vibrating, moving objects, or an electric discharge will also create an ultrasonic wave, which is very directional in nature and can be used to pinpoint the exact location of a leak, vibration, or discharge.

Visual and audible leak pinpointing
The Amprobe ULD-405 bar graph will indicate proximity to the source of the leak when scanning a target area with the Receiver’s microphone sensor. Plug the headphones into the Receiver to audibly hear the leak and verify its source. For example, air leaks will produce more of a hissing sound, while electric discharge manifests in a ticking sound.
Note: There is no speaker on the Receiver. Without headphones, no noise will be audible.
Reduce your Utility Bill
Air leaks can have a huge impact on the energy efficiency of your whole system. The ULD-405 ultrasonic leak detector will help you troubleshoot problem areas where air leaks have gone undetected, reducing your overall financial costs.
Amprobe ULD-405 Accessories
The ULD-405 Leak Detector comes supplied with additional accessories that are helpful in leak identification. Use the Parabola attachment in situations where there is a high level of background noise to help direct the ultrasound toward the sensor. Use the Tubular Extension with the adapter in hard to reach areas for additional reach.
Leak not pressurized? Use the ULD-400-T Transmitter
When a leak is not pressurized sufficiently or located in an unpressurized system, it is not emitting enough ultrasonic sound for the Receiver to detect. In these circumstances, use the ULD-400-T Transmitter (sold separately or included in the ULD-420 Kit) to emit the ultrasonic sound readable by the Receiver. The Transmitter is programmed with three signal levels for precise pinpointing of leaks.
