Cable Certification

There are quite a few manufacturers of twisted pair cables used in LAN networks. As the manufacturing process varies at times, it is a good practice to verify cable speed according to the original specs printed on the cabling itself. Such a process is an assurance that data transmission will be completed with full integrity and that networks will perform at maximum capacity.

Do I need to certify or just verify copper cable?

This is a very good question. If the network owner wants only to make sure the network performs up to cable specs printed on it, you most likely need to only check for termination faults (wire map), verify cable length, and run propagation delay tests to check speed. This is what over 90% of installers do.

If you are asked to certify a network in a data center or a bank, you most likely need to perform a complete set of test as specified by the ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B standard.
