Circuit Breaker Finder – Electrical

A circuit breaker finder lets an electrician identify breakers with corresponding circuits or pair electrical outlets to breakers and circuits. This is one of the most common troubleshooting tasks any service technician does very often.

Breaker finders usually work with 110 V to 125 VAC voltage and they use current as the form for tracing. Some of the sets may even test outlets, including GFCI. Simply plug in a transmitter to the outlet and trace to the correct breaker in the electrical panel box.

If you are an electrician working in commercial or industrial buildings your task of tracing breakers may become much more difficult. Electrical circuits there might be enclosed in metallic conduit that depresses the transmitter signal strength and you cannot trace breakers, as the signal does not get to the breaker panel.

In these situations, maintenance electricians or managers have to resort to wire tracers, as they come with more powerful signal transmitters. We recommend wire tracers that come with signal boosters, including: Amprobe AT-2005-a, Ampobe AT-6030, Amprobe AT-7030 or Ideal Industries 61-959. These wire tracers are much more expensive but get the job done right in commercial and industrial applications.
