A Circuit tracer or wire finder are two common names for the same type of instrument. These testers identify breakers in a panel, trace wires (circuits) behind a wall or sometimes underground, and help to determine which circuit an outlet is connected to. Circuit tracers are an electrical contractor’s or service tech’s best friends.

An electrician can use a circuit tracer in residential applications, commercial, or even industrial sites. However, these different applications may require the use of more or less advanced instruments. Circuit tracers for residential are generally inexpensive, as wires are not in conduits, and their runs are shorter. On the other hand, in many commercial or industrial buildings, circuits are protected by metallic conduits.

If a circuit is in metallic conduit you need an advanced circuit tracer that comes with a signal booster. Such conduits depress signals, so technicians won’t be able to identify breakers or trace circuits throughout their total length without a booster. Time lost on suboptimal test equipment really costs more money in the long run than an expensive circuit tracer does right now.
