New environmentally friendly refrigerants have been introduced and sold as replacements or retrofits for high ozone-depleting (ODP) or high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. These refrigerants are meant to function like their less environmentally friendly predecessors, but there is no sure way to know what refrigerant you are working with if you don’t have a tool designed to analyze the gas. Simply assuming a refrigerant is right or only relying on P/T charts can cause more confusion and lead to mixing or inappropriate use of refrigerants. Furthermore, mixing refrigerants can lead to system failures and potentially put the user or unsuspecting service technician at risk of injury or harm. Now more than ever, it has become necessary to verify every refrigerant in a system or cylinder is correct to ensure that equipment runs effectively and efficiently.
The Neutronics Legend refrigerant identifier control panel serves as the user interface. The control panel features three soft buttons that change their function as the instrument changes modes, a full-color graphic LCD display, a home button, and a Power button. The LCD display gives the user prompts and directions for running a test and then will display the test results. The percentage shown for each refrigerant indicates the total purity weight of that refrigerant, equaling 100%, with air measured independently. The Legend Series HFC includes a built-in printer, and if desired, test results can be printed at the press of a button.
The Neutronics Legend gas analyzer will analyze or identify a wide array of refrigerants. The 6.5-foot polyurethane ether sample hose connects to the sample inlet located on the back of the Neutronics Legend HFC, allowing the refrigerant to flow through the sensor. After completing an analysis, the refrigerant analyzer will show one of six different result screens, Expected, Imbalanced, Contaminated, Diluted, Identified refrigerant, or Unknown.

Displays a yellow screen, and refrigerant is found to have the required components but outside the AHRI Standard acceptable range to be considered ideal.
Displays a red screen, and the refrigerant is found to be contaminated and should not be recovered with pure gas or reused.
Displays a yellow screen and found that air has contaminated the sample. Air can be removed from the refrigerant but can be harmful if present inside a system.
Displays a green screen, and the composition of the refrigerant will not be shown. Instead, the analyzer confirms the refrigerant matched the expected identified gas and provides channel data to reference as a “fingerprint” model of that gas.
Displays a yellow screen to indicate caution as the gas is unknown. Unknown refrigerant should be handled with care as there is no certainty as to what refrigerant is present.
The Neutronics Legend comes in a custom-fit hard-shell carrying case. The case provides rugged protection for the instrument as well as convenient storage for all components but is not watertight.
