Surface mounting trades a little accuracy for a great deal of access. Because the element reads through the pipe wall rather than the fluid, the response is slower than an immersion sensor and the reading is affected by ambient air, so pipe insulation over the sensor matters as much as the sensor itself. In return there is nothing to drain, nothing to shut down and no fitting to weld, which is why this series is the usual answer on an existing hydronic loop.
