The Tramex Skipper 5 Marine Moisture SMM5 is a dual-depth, non-destructive, analog marine moisture meter that detects excess moisture in GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) boat hulls, decks, and coach roofs, including sandwich or cored structures. The Tramex SMM5 uses a three-electrode array to establish both shallow (3/8”) and deep (1 ¼”) depth of moisture content within GRP composites. The measurement is read on the analog display or sent to the Tramex App on an iOS or Android smart device. The Tramex Skipper 5 is an essential tool for boat owners, yacht surveyors, or anyone working in the marine industry needing to determine moisture content in a boat.

Overview
Trapped moisture in any situation can lead to problems. In GRP boats, trapped moisture can lead to osmosis. While in wooden boats, trapped moisture leads to rot and decay, which weakens their wooden components reducing the structural strength of the hull and overall value of the boat. Weakened areas are not always noticeable on a visual inspection, so a moisture meter can help identify high moisture areas or even locate the source of a hidden leak.
The Tramex Skipper moisture meter determines moisture content by applying a high-audio frequency signal between a pair of soft rubber electrodes on the instrument base. A third electrode provides genuine shallow range measurements on a smaller footprint. Capacitive coupling between the electrodes and the sample allows impedance to be determined. This is interpreted as a moisture value and displayed on the large analog meter. Additionally, meter readings can be sent instantly to the Tramex App on an Android or iOS mobile devices by Bluetooth.
The Tramex Skipper 5 marine moisture meter has three ranges of sensitivity, Hardwood, Shallow Depth, and GRP for detecting elevated moisture in GRP and all wooden parts in a boat. The Skipper 5 incorporates non-destructive dual-depth functionality. The Dual-depth functionality of the SMM5 of switching between the ‘regular depth’ scale and shallow depth scale, allows for a comparative of ‘surface’ versus ‘surface + core’’ moisture.
Scale 1 - Hardwood is used to measure the moisture content of hardwood with readings from 5% - 30%. An audible sound will alert the user if the reading goes above 18%. This signal can be disabled if desired. Depending on the density of the material being tested, the Tramex SMM5 can penetrate up to approximately 1.25” below the surface.
Scale 2 - Shallow Depth is used to detect moisture on or just below the surface. This can be of great benefit in verifying if high moisture readings in Scale 1 are a result of deep-set moisture, surface moisture, or conductive coating. The Shallow Depth scale is also useful when checking if the surface is dry enough before painting or coating. Shallow depth reads the surface or top 0.4” only.
Scale 3 - GRP is used to identify the presence of moisture trapped between the lay-up and gel coating that can cause blistering in the coating of the hull. The deep signal penetration (1.25”) of the Tramex Skipper 5 moisture meter can identify areas where osmosis, or potential for osmosis development, is present. Reading in this mode is taken in the comparative scale 0-100.
The Tramex SMM5 Skipper is encased in a durable ergonomic body with rubber grips. The moisture meter also features a Hold button to “freeze” reading when taking measurements in hard to reach areas. An optional extension handle is available for measuring out of reach or high places more conveniently.
Tramex Meter App
The Tramex Meters App used with the Skipper 5 Marine Moisture SMM5 enables you to visualize live readings and examine moisture content data on an Android or iOS device. The enlarged visualization of moisture readings on the App is extremely helpful when using your Tramex Moisture meter on the optional extension handle. From the App, the marine moisture test results can then be used to create moisture maps, reports, and charts for sharing. In addition, the Tramex moisture meter's Bluetooth connectivity to the Tramex Meter App helps to GeoTag test results, create, save and share photos.
