Tramex Skipper Plus Moisture Meter for Wooden Boats
The Tramex SMP Skipper Plus Moisture Content Testers for Wooden Boats is a non-destructive, analog moisture meter used to detect moisture content in GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) and wooden boats. This hand-held moisture meter allows you to quickly and accurately check hulls and decks both inside and outside for trapped moisture or leaks. This is an essential tool for boat owners, yacht surveyors, or any one working in the marine industry needing to determine moisture content in a boat.
Key Features
- Non-destructive detection and measurement of moisture in wooden boats, GRP boat hulls, and wooden parts
- Three ranges for detecting moisture in GRP and hardwood for saltwater and freshwater
- Locates osmosis in GRP hulls
- Moisture readings of 5% - 30% for wood and 0-100 on a comparative scale for GRP and other materials
- Confirms if boats are dry enough to paint or varnish
- Trace bulkhead or deck leaks
- Hold function to “freeze” readings
- Audible warning for areas of high moisture
Overview
Trapped moisture in any situation can lead to problems. In GRP boats, trapped moisture can lead to osmosis. While in wooden boats, trapped moisture leads to rot and decay which weakens their wooden components reducing the structural strength of the hull and overall value of the boat. Weakened areas are not always noticeable on a visual inspection, so a moisture meter can help identify areas of high moisture or even locate the source of a hidden leak so restoration can occur. Moisture meters like the Skipper Plus are also essential for monitoring the moisture content of the boat to ensure it is dry enough to be repaired properly.
The Skipper Plus has three ranges of sensitivity for detecting moisture in GRP and hardwood in both salt and fresh water. The Skipper Plus uses a nondestructive impedance measurement signal that penetrated the surface up to 1 ¼” to determine the presence of moisture.
The user has the option to select Range 1 to measure the moisture content of hardwood with readings from 5% - 30%. An audible sound will alert the user if the reading is high. This signal can be disable is desired.
Osmosis in GRP hulls can be located by using the Skipper’s deep signal penetration in Range 2 to identify the presence of moisture trapped between the glassfibre and plastic laminate that can cause blistering in the coating of the hull. Reading in this mode is taken in the comparative scale 0-100.
The Skipper Plus can be used in Range 3 to detect moisture on or just below the surface. This can be of great benefit in verifying if high moisture readings in Range 1 or 2 are a result of deep set moisture, surface moisture, or conductive coating. This range is also useful when checking if the surface is dry enough prior to painting or coating.
The Tramex Skipper is user friendly and easy to use. Simply turn the meter "on", select the range, and press the instrument firmly on to the material being tested making sure the pad is in full contact with the surface. The reading will instantly be viewed on the easy to read analog display. The hold function on the meter is useful to “freeze” a reading that would be difficult to see. After two minutes of inactivity, the meter will automatically turn off.
